Listen to the don'ts.
Listen to the shouldn'ts.
The impossibles, the won'ts.
Listen to the never haves.
Then listen close to me -
Anything can happen, child,
Anything can be.
-- Shel Silverstein, Listen to the Mustn'ts
Yesterday was an emotional night with Neva - Cheryl has already blogged about her Montre et Raconte fiasco at school yesterday. I agree with Cheryl's assessment that although Neva initially seemed disappointed, the experience ultimately aroused more emotions in us than it seemed to in her.
We smothered her in extra hugs and she got to play Pikmin a little late in exchange for letting me read her her story. We read from Where the Sidewalk Ends, and feeling extra kind, I read a few more of the short poems than usual.
When we got to the poem called "Love", I was curious If Neva would be able to sound out the word. She surprised me by not sounding it out, instead reading the word whole.
As far as I know, this is the first word I've ever seen her read. And to me, it seems a good choice to start on.
